A Paycheck Away from Homelessness

Meet Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans (TAS) Client A.C. He moved from the Shreveport area to New Orleans in 2019, right before the Covid pandemic started.  He had a stable job and a home to go to each night.  A.C. worked hard but had little means and was living paycheck to paycheck.  Unfortunately, he lost his employment during the pandemic.  After having some stability, he found himself in shelter and remained there for almost a year.

Fortunately, A.C. received a housing voucher. Once housed, A.C. came to TAS and visited our jobs counselor. Within a month, A.C. found employment paying close to $17 per hour. A.C. contributes his success to the fact that he had a home to go to each night. “I could not have done this without being in a house and on my own,” said A.C, “When I was in the shelter, it was so depressing there.”

Many in our community are one lost paycheck away from life in a shelter.
