A Letter from our CEO

Dear Valued Friends and Supporters,

I am thrilled and deeply honored to step into the role of CEO at the Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans. The 160-year legacy of this remarkable agency is not just a testament to its enduring service but a beacon of inspiration for the journey ahead. In my initial weeks, I've had the privilege of immersing myself in the agency's history, working closely with our dedicated staff, passionate board members, and resilient clients.

The heart of this organization beats with the passion of individuals committed to the well-being of our community. Their dedication, drive, and talent mirror the spirit of a city they love, striving for the prosperity and thriving of its citizens. The mission of the Traveler’s Aid Society—to prevent homelessness and support those in need—resonates deeply, not just within our community but in our shared responsibility to alleviate poverty globally.

Within the Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans, we stand as a pillar of support during life's darkest moments and toughest challenges. From emergency shelter and crisis counseling to providing a warm meal for those facing hunger, we create a haven where citizens can gather strength to overcome adversity. One of our clients eloquently expressed, "I'm destined for greater things than being homeless." This sentiment reflects the transformative impact our organization has on the lives of New Orleans's vulnerable citizens, fostering hope and determination.

Throughout my career in the nonprofit sector, I've dedicated myself to advocating for better education and programming for Louisiana’s children and families. I firmly believe that by providing every individual with access to the right tools, we can eradicate homelessness, poverty, and educational barriers within our vulnerable communities. The Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans exemplifies this belief, and I am genuinely grateful to join this exceptional team.

As we embark on this journey together, I look forward to the continued collaboration and support from each of you. Together, we can create positive change, building a future where no one faces homelessness or despair alone.

Sincerely Yours,
Donna Paramore, CFRE

Our History

In the mid-19th century, on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, the city of St. Louis faced a profound challenge: assisting the throngs of travelers venturing westward through their bustling city. These adventurers sought the promise of an expansive frontier, with dreams of discovering riches in the hills of California. However, the harsh realities of unpredictable stagecoach schedules, the looming threat of cholera, and unforeseen delays in their journeys often left these travelers destitute, devoid of even the most basic human necessities such as food and medicine.

During this era, essential medical and community services were predominantly reserved for city residents, leaving these transient pioneers and new immigrants at the mercy of benevolent strangers as they navigated the arduous path to a new life. It was in this context that St. Louis, guided by the visionary leadership of Mayor Bryan Mullanphy, embarked on a noble mission to extend a helping hand to these intrepid souls who found themselves stranded on their quest for a brighter future. Tragically, Mayor Mullanphy passed away in 1851, but his enduring legacy included a bequest of one million dollars in his will, dedicated to aiding those brave travelers journeying westward. With this extraordinary act of generosity, the Travelers Aid movement was born, forever altering the course of history.

Over 160 Years Of Service To Communities

With a Legacy Spanning Over 160 Years of Service to Communities

Travelers Aid's origins are deeply intertwined with the Industrial Revolution, a period when economic growth led to increased mobility as cities expanded to accommodate a burgeoning workforce. As the 20th century dawned, Travelers Aid Societies emerged in major cities across the United States, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York.

These pioneering programs were rooted in a simple yet profound idea: to protect stranded individuals, particularly women and children, from those who sought to exploit, harm, or victimize them during times of misfortune. Ensuring a safe haven became the defining hallmark of Travelers Aid.

While many Travelers Aid programs initially took root within faith-based communities, Travelers Aid has always been dedicated to providing essential services without regard to age, gender, or personal beliefs. Our commitment to serving those in need has remained unwavering throughout our storied history.
